This morning Rep. Summer Lee and County Executive Sara Innamorato joined workers and officials in unveiling the newly renovated Armstrong Tunnel, connecting South Side to Uptown. The $13.1 million construction project has been completed after over two years of closure. Upgrades to the tunnel include new lighting, electrical, and fire suppression systems, the installation of a state-of-the-art CCTV monitoring network, and complete resurfacing of the road with new pavement, curbs, sidewalks and traffic signage. County Executive Sara Innamorato spoke on the importance of federal funding in this project, “This project was paid for with 80% federal dollars and 20% of those dollars coming from the county.” The newly improved Armstrong Tunnel is set to reopen tomorrow, May 29th.
