While East Carson Street has a reputation as a playground for the over-21 drinking set that to its busy bar scene, a new frozen-yogurt joint caters to the kid in us all.
Love Yogurt, which opened four months ago, is a sweet spot for any kid or grown-up. Inside, you're embraced by vibrant orange and green walls that are both playful and swanky. Along the back wall, Love offers the frozen-yogurt taps, where customers can serve themselves.
On the day I visited, flavors ranged from classics such as vanilla and chocolate to birthday-cake batter and taro (a sweet root). A sign indicated more exotic flavors, such as honeydew melon and pistachio, would be coming.
You can mix and match yogurts, but for truly creative taste combinations, head for the toppings bar. There you'll find Fruity Pebbles, sprinkles, various candies, shaved coconut, peanut-butter cups, brownie crumbles and an assortment of fresh fruit. For something a little different, try one of the variations of mochi — a rice cake available in green tea or mango flavors. There are also "popping pearls," which are little balls of mango with fruit juice in the center.
Like most places on the South Side, Love Yogurt stays open late: until 11 p.m. on weeknights, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Yogurt is tasty and has healthful properties, meaning this is one night-time choice on Carson Street that won't lead to regret the next morning.
