In 2019, a secret underground facility is breeding clones, among them Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two-Delta (Scartlett Johansson). In Michael Bay's sci-fi actioner, the pair becomes hipped to the outside world by a stray insect, and bust out -- fully formed but woefully innocent -- for the City of Angels. Naturally they're pursued by their evil overlord (Sean Bean), which enables Bay to unload his patented mega-super-duper explosions and vehicle crashes (it is now OK to fly a plane through a high-rise office building again). Early on the film dares to dabble in more interesting subject matter -- medical ethics, class, science vs. commerce -- but the story falls apart in the bombastic second act. You'll be weary of ticking off the film's antecedents (Coma, Logan's Run, any other Bay film), and the last reel is so perfunctory you'll be surprised only that you weren't. Starts Fri., July 22. (AH)
