REBOUND

After devoting too much time to product endorsements and throwing yet another on-court tantrum, Coach Roy (Martin Lawrence) gets booted from the college basketball circuit. In one of those only-in the-movies set-ups, Roy learns that if he coaches any team without incident for a couple weeks he'll be reinstated. So he returns to his own low-rent middle school in Columbus, Ohio, to lead the inept Smelters to the inevitable state championship. It's a woefully familiar kiddie-sports comedy with the same tired gags -- kids barfing, getting hit in the crotch, flubbing plays -- and generic inspirational messages. Lawrence, himself in career rebound mode, can't quite sell it: He bugs his eyes and jives, but the material is lame, and his phoned-in performance seems to acknowledge that truth. Without even a decent supporting character to liven things up, Steve Carr's film should get filed under "Retread." (AH)
