Leaving Boston

When all is said and done,
and every thought and thing is rubble

when the air is wet-towel moist
and all our jibberish distills

when homunculi wear track-pants,
and Hell horseshoes round a harbor

when trees recede
and grass is papier-mâchéd
with midday sleepers,
and fear is served with coffee --

then our horizon will be Boston's,
and our food will curdle like chowder,
our talk will lose its R's,
and life will drain
like ale from taps
for someone else to drink.
