Despite the fact that Interpol shares a name with the International Criminal Police Organization, the band still hasn't moved onto the crime-fighting stage of its career. But even with more than decade of making great music, the group still has plenty in the works, including a new album and a show at Mr. Small's Theatre this Wed., June 23.
Interpol's new self-titled album is scheduled to come out September. The album's first single, "Lights," has been floating around the Internet for some time and can be downloaded from Interpol's website.
If "Lights" is a preview for what's to come on Interpol, it seems like the band is sticking to its old tricks: It's a haunting, mellow track that stays true to Interpol's dark style. Despite an echoic heaviness that's slightly more extreme than on previous albums, there's something oddly uplifting about the track's reverberating guitar and steady bass.
The self-titled album will also be bassist Carlos Dengler's last with Interpol. Dengler left the band after the completion of the album and will be replaced on tour by Dave Pajo, of Slint, Tortoise, Zwan and many others. The band's recently cancelled a slew of tour dates scheduled with U2, when Bono's bad back put a crick in the plans. Of the original tour dates, Pittsburgh is one of four cities where Interpol will play as planned.
