Mindless Self Indulgence is a melting pot of music, from punk rock to electronic music. The group, which has been at it for more than 15 years, is very unapologetic and blunt when it comes to lyrical content — take, for example the name of its latest album, How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence. Bobbito Garcia spent much of the '90s as co-host of The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show, a legendary New York City radio show that helped break many of the biggest hip-hop names of the day, from Nas to Wu-Tang Clan. More recently, he wrote a book, Where'd You Get Those? New York City's Sneaker Culture: 1960-87, which was reissued for its 10th anniversary last year. Tonight, he appears at Round Corner Cantina for a DJ set (along with locals Bamboo and Selecta), then tomorrow he shows up at 720 Music, Clothing and Café to sign copies of the book. It's been seven years now that Jenesis Magazine has been documenting hip-hop music and culture through a regular online publication — not limited to, but often keen on, Pittsburgh-related content. Tonight, the mag celebrates the opening of a new office, and a successful first seven, with a DJ party at Pub I.G. in Oakland. The third annual Cure Rock show is a benefit concert to promote the fight against pediatric and adolescent cancer. Not only does Cure Rock have music, but there's also an information fair to educate and raise awareness about the disease. The artists performing include Kate Earl (a Los Angeles-based singer who has worked with the likes of Brett Dennen), TeamMate (featuring ex-Pittsburgher Dani Buncher), and locals Triggers and Molly Alphabet. Equal parts silly and pointed, Seattle's Tacocat is something of a millennial take on the Pacific Northwest scene of the '90s. The band's most recent video-single, "Crimson Wave," manages to mix surf rock, crazy costumes and menstruation. It's a little bit subversive, but it's all in good fun, as is the band's live show, which goes down tonight at the Mr. Roboto Project.
