"In America we had the American theater, which is the only thing we invented in this country -- except for jazz -- and it's gone." The speaker is Kitty Carlise Hart in Rick McKay's documentary about Broadway's Golden Age. McKay wanted to find out if it was truly gone and, in fact, if it had ever existed. Using archival footage and talking-head interviews, McKay brings to life an amazing, inspiring look at this indigenous art form in its heyday: the American theater from after the second World War to the late '60s. McKay's documentarian skills may not be fully developed but the sheer glory of these Broadway superstar reminiscences makes that point moot: Chita Rivera, Carol Burnett, Ben Gazzara, Barbara Cook, Jerry Orbach, Gwen Verdon, Julie Harris, John Raitt, Maureen Stapleton, Elaine Stritch, et. al. Sadly, in an age of corporatized entertainment, America's cultural glory may be all in the past.
