Throughout the history of professional wrestling, what a performer can do on the mic is often just as important as what they do in the ring. Each afternoon, Smark Attack will highlight a wrestling promo that shows off the best, and sometimes the worst, in pro wrestling microphone work.
And we're not just looking for classic promos. If you're a local wrestler or if you've always wanted to be a pro wrestler and want to show off your mic skills send your best promo: 45 seconds or less to
info@pghcitypaper.com. If we end up running it on the blog, we'll give you a
City Paper t-shirt.

Britt Baker wins the IWC Women's championship
Indy wrestling lives and breathes in unexpected places, turning spaces like gymnasiums into intimate theaters for a few hours. At International Wrestling Cartel’s event on July 22nd, Threat Level Midnight, a passionate crowd assembled to see a deep card of wrestling from local favorites and independent super stars.
The people crowded around the ring in the Court Time Sports Center in Elizabeth, Pa. were a mix of families, groups of teens, adult friends getting together to indulge in the graps and older folks who likely have been watching the sport since before I was born. It’s a nice example of the squared circle’s ability to make art accessible to a wide range of folks.

On July 5, Allegheny County Council passed an ordinance mandating that toddlers be given blood tests to check for lead poisoning. The county’s health director, Karen Hacker, said in a May
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article that universal childhood
lead testing is necessary in Allegheny County because of lead-paint issues in its aging homes and elevated lead levels in the water supply. (It should be noted that Pittsburgh announced testing results on July 18 that comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, but many consider those standards outdated.)

Chris No. 2 is the fearless vocalist and bassist of Pittsburgh-based political punk act Anti-Flag. He was kind enough to take a few moments out of his busy hometown gig day to chat with City Paper about 11 years of Warped Tour, making yourself feel at home in the middle of a long tour, and holding it down as a political and punk staple on the tour.

Each week, we post a song from a local artist online for free. This week, it's a XOMwonderful remix Moon Baby's "Tip of the Tongue." Moon Baby's new album, Barbara, is set for release this fall and we’ve already heard the excellent debut single “Pumps by the Pool” (song of the summer?). There’s a lot to look forward to, but today we’re looking back, with a remix of “Tip of the Tongue,” from the 2016 album Hollywood Killed Tara Reid. Stream or download “Tip of my Tongue (remix)” below and keep an eye out for Barbara.

Myra Galarza is the drummer of joyful punk band Bad Cop/Bad Cop. Her raspy voice and great sense of humor fill every space she goes with a bright energy, as City Paper discovered upon interviewing her at this year’s Warped Tour. We chatted about experiencing unfamiliar weather, letting loose on a busy tour and seeing sexism in punk rock.

Frank Novinec is the guitarist of seminal metalcore band Hatebreed. Hiding out in the air-conditioned pressroom from the beating sunlight, we had a conversation about the band tackling its first Warped Tour in 17 years, being a legacy band and staying relevant in the industry for a long time.

When
Marvel Comics and
Ed Piskor announced tonight, at the
San Diego Comic-Con International, that Piskor had landed an unprecedented special project, it was a new high point in the Pittsburgh-based comics artist’s skyrocketing career. But like any superhero tale, Piskor’s new gig — an epic, multi-publication retelling of the X-Men saga — has a compelling origin story.
