Throughout the history of professional wrestling, what a performer can do on the mic is often just as important as what they do in the ring. Each afternoon, Smark Attack will highlight a wrestling promo that shows off the best, and sometimes the worst, in pro wrestling microphone work.

And we're not just looking for classic promos. If you're a local wrestler or if you've always wanted to be a pro wrestler and want to show off your mic skills send your best promo: 45 seconds or less to [email protected]. If we end up running it on the blog, we'll give you a City Paper t-shirt.

You'll mostly only see him in movies these days (or possibly politics in the near future), but I still contend the greatest role Dwayne Johnson ever played was the version of himself known as The Rock. Once he grew into that larger-than-life character, there was no stopping him. This promo from 1999 isn't particularly special, in as much as all of The Rock's promos were pretty entertaining. This clip comes to Smark Attack because it's a perfect example how over the man was in the late-1990s. The WWE's Attitude Era was known for over-the-top promos that brought a huge pop from the crowd. And with maybe the exception of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, it's hard to find anyone who could pop a crowd like The Rock.
