'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' event comes to Pittsburgh

Since 2001, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence has covered ground in cities around the globe.

Now, that event is coming to Pittsburgh. On Sept. 12, men will don high heels for a one-mile walk through Bloomfield to raise awareness about sexual violence.

“I think the issue needs more attention then it gets,” says Camille Goleb, the event’s organizer. “There’s still the misconception that sexual assault is something that happens with a stranger in a dark alley.”

The event will start with a rally where attendees will hear about the personal toll of sexual violence. There will also be booths set up by organizations like Pittsburgh Action Against Rape where people can get educational information.

“To men particularly and the community in general, I want to send the message that this is your issue too,” says Goleb. “Just because it hasn’t happened to you doesn’t mean you can’t fix it. If we don’t start speaking up, who else will.”

Shoes will be provided for all men who pre-register, but event organizers are still looking for donations of shoes size 10 and above. All proceeds will benefit PAAR.

"To survivors I want it to send a very loud very visibile message that you are supported," says Goleb.

After the walk, there will also be a series of shows held at three nearby venues. The cost will be $10 for all three, or $5 for the underage venue. Performers will include  Murder for Girls, The Park Plan, LoFi Delphi, Old Game, The Dovewires, Molly Alphabet, LRAD,  Morgan Erina, Swampwalk, Liss Victory, Joanna Lowe, Sun Hound, Donna Occhipinti, Egomyth Don Strange & Band, and Kid Durango.

“It’s a very visible and wonderful and loud way to support the sexual violence survivor community,” says Goleb. “And we’re putting a little bit of Pittsburgh flavor on it by adding a three venue concert.”
