As record-setting cold hit Pittsburgh this week, CP visited two homeless shelters – Operation Safety Net and Light of Life Rescue Mission – to see what their needs are this winter.

Operation Safety Net, part of Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and funded in part by Allegheny County, says it is in need of monetary donations to replenish its supplies. They operate severe weather emergency shelters from November through March when temperatures dip to 25 degrees Fahrenheit and below. In addition to offering shelter, Operation Safety Net provides a meal, undergarments and several social services. To donate, visit www.pmhs.org.

Light of Life Rescue Mission says its main need right now is men’s gloves. However, the rescue mission, which operates an emergency homeless shelter year-round, is always in need of travel-sized toiletries and men’s underwear and socks. Light of Life also provides long-term programs, including addiction recovery. To donate, visit www.lightoflife.org/ways-to-give/.
