Gallery — Very Fine Art, a new venue in the South Side Works, opens its debut show with a reception tomorrow.

The group exhibit will feature works by 16 artists in media ranging from oil painting and photography to pottery and assemblage.

The gallery is run by artist Barbara Page, who says in a press release that she recruited artists through a Craigslist ad that said, “Please, no manga, nudes, blood, skulls, Pittsburgh skylines, rainbows, fairies, puppies, kittens, satanic images or symbols.”

Those strictures aside, she was open to artists both experienced and underexposed, from internationally known mosaic artist Rachel Sager to artists who “have been limited to showing their work in tattoo shops, neighborhood cafes and leaning up against a fence in the Strip District on nice days,” according to the release.

Page also has an unusual business model for a gallery. Page says she takes no commissions (buyers’ checks are made out directly to the artists). Instead, artists juried into the gallery pay a fraction of the rent.

Along with Page herself, artists in the new show include: Jim Trusilo, Dorothy Lampl, Gary Hanzler, Catherine Ryan, Peggi Habets, Cory Lee, Drew Maks, John Flatz, William C. Pfaff, Carol Crowley, Linda Price-Sneddon, Kim Cagni, Carly Diopolo and Megan Gryziec. (Pictured is art by Rachel Sager.)

The reception, which is free, runs from 6-9 p.m. tomorrow.

Gallery — Very Fine Art is located at 2743 E. Carson St. It can be reached at galleryveryfineartpgh@gmail.com.
