Art Cars, Arts Fest Join Forces Saturday on Penn Avenue

Posted By on Thu, Sep 25, 2014 at 3:33 PM

A three-year-old festival built around street-legal art cars and an arts fest in its second year hit Garfield together on Saturday.

Jason Sauer, of Most Wanted Fine Art gallery, and D.S. Kinsel of BOOM Concepts art space offers the Penn Avenue Arts in Motion Art + Car Festival.

The car component is an expression of Sauer’s love for art cars — vehicles with objects glued or otherwise attached to them. The decorations can be anything from plastic toys to fully themed adaptations that turn a vehicle into an Addams Family house on wheels, like one of the cars on display at last year’s festival. The art cars this year will gather at Penn and Winebiddle.

Arts in Motion, meanwhile, offers performances on an outdoor stage at Penn and Winebiddle and hands-on art activities.

Performers include: The Air Masters (aerial silk dance); Kabarett Vulgare (cabaret and sideshow acts); BaM Choreography (hip-hop dance); Shad Ali (hip hop); youth steel band Soundwaves; and hip hop by Statement Records.

The performances run every 15-30 minutes from noon-8 p.m. except for hour-long sets by: Air Masters (at noon), rock band Grand Snafu (6:30 p.m.) and fire-performance troupe Sirkus Dayz (7 p.m.). And from 5-6:30 p.m., Penn Avenue art space Bunker Projects presents a series of short performances, including an improv opera titled “The Sad Princess.”

The art-making activities take place at venues including Pittsburgh Glass Center and Assemble art space. Live art battles and art vendors are also promised.

The festival is free, with overflow parking at the K-2 convenience store lot at 4900 Penn Ave. due to ongoing road construction.

The festival runs from noon-8 p.m. on Saturday. A complete schedule is here.
