Scholar and self-described “philanthropy wonk” Lucy Bernholz — one of the activists who “jumped the hashtag” during the 2011 Super Bowl — gives a talk at Pitt called “Inventing Digital Civil Society.”

Digital civil society involves how emerging technologies affect philanthropy, policy and activism. It includes everything from nonprofit organizations and political organizers to advocates for open data and open government.

In 2011, for instance, Bernholz and her cohorts used Twitter to draw attention to the controversy over the Susan G. Komen Foundation pulling support from Planned Parenthood. (See Bernholz’s TED talk on that project here.)

Bernholz is a visiting scholar at Stanford University’s Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society, where she is helping to launch the Digital Civil Society Lab. She is also a visiting scholar at The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, where she is encouraging Foundation colleagues to think about foundations in the digital age.

She’s been widely quoted, in outlets including The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and NPR.
