New “Pittsburgh A&E Book” Out

Local arts entrepreneur James A. Richards has published the latest edition of his long-running catalogues of local arts talent and resources.

The Pittsburgh A&E Book 2014 is 170 pages of listings and contact info, with categories from “Associations & Unions” to “Visual Arts Resources,” and from rock bands, theater companies and performances spaces to stuntpeople and Cher impersonators.

This is the sixth edition of the book since the first one, in 2001, and the first new edition since 2009.

Richards calls it “the region’s only arts and entertainment professional directory.”

Richards especially touts the book’s Film/Video section, with listings for props, set pieces, wardrobe, sound stages and more, for film and TV productions.

The book’s largest single section, meanwhile, is Music Resources, including listings to help performers find concert venues, promoters, record labels, recording services and instruments, among much else.

This edition is also the first to come with a suggested retail price ($19.95 for the print edition, $9.95 for the e-book). Previous editions were free because of advertiser and sponsor support that Richard says he was unable to garner this time out because of the slow economy. For bricks-and-mortar locations, see here.

Richards has a long history in the local arts community, from helping expand Light-Up Night to doing marketing for LGBT film fest Reel Q. He might be best known for the entertainment-trade newsletter Pittsburgh Applause.

Last year, Richards published Marketing 101, a how-to book for musicians.
