Story of the day: As you've no doubt heard, a Commonwealth Court judge has put the state's voter ID law on hiatus. Under Robert Simpson's ruling, the November election will be carried out like the spring primary was -- with poll workers asking for, but not requiring, IDs. That doesn't mean we've heard the last of it: Although neither side seems inclined to appeal, there could be a dispute over ongoing advertising about ID. Still, in the meantime, why not sit back and enjoy the prospect of Republicans devouring their own? And relish the fact that, without the law, polling guru Nate Silver gives Barack Obama a 97 percent chance to win Pennsylvania.
In regional healthcare news, Gov. Tom Corbett, who not long ago successfully pushed for a renewed contract between Highmark and UPMC, is now pushing for a renewed partnership between Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System. (Some background and kvetching about the dispute can be found here.) If Corbett pulls this off, someone needs to put the guy on the next airplane to the Middle East.
The stinkbugs cometh. Or not, I dunno. Barely seen a one, myself. But according to local TV news -- and when have THEY ever sensationalized a problem? -- the hot summer could mean more stink bugs than ever. Courtesy of WPXI, though, here's a handy guide to making your own stink-bug trap. Don't say I never did anything for you.
Former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary is suing Penn State University, saying the school fired and defamed him after he reported Jerry Sandusky's molestation of a young boy in a Penn State shower room. McQueary wants $8 million, which makes you wonder what the kids who were actually molested are entitled to.
Don't forget that today is the Pittsburgh Gives "Day of Giving."
