Anamanaguchi comes to Garfield Artworks Wed., Aug. 8

Pittsburgh gets a taste for chiptune this week with a performance from Anamanaguchi. After a busy few months of touring, including dates at Lollapalooza last week, the NYC quartet will close out their summer at Garfield Artworks this Wednesday.

Anamanaguchi

For the uninitiated, Anamanaguchi falls under the 8-bit umbrella, crafting high-energy, lyricless pop through a bevy of guitars and video-game equipment from the 1980s. It's cartoonish, wicked fun punk-pop at its finest. But written descriptions don’t really do any of it justice, so here’s a video from their show at Blip Festival 2011 in Tokyo to get you going.

Since forming in 2004, Anamanaguchi has grown and gained some serious niche popularity (and some outer-niche love as well) thanks to their unmistakable energy and mindlessly fun live show. Career highlights include 2009’s phenomenal breakthrough Dawn Metropolis and 2010's soundtrack for the Scott Pilgrim video game (which seems fitting, no?). The party boat antics and busy visuals more than make up for the absent lyrics.

Anamanaguchi will be joined this Wednesday by Hot Sugar and Shisa. The show at Garfield Artworks starts at 8pm. Tickets are $10, all ages welcome.
