Anthony Williams ad REALLY drops the ball, uses Santonio Holmes jersey

Maybe others have seen this already, but gubernatorial candidate Anthony Hardy Williams may have committed the political gaffe of this election season with this new ad.

For most of its 30 seconds, the ad is a conventional spot, which mostly consists of "real Pennsylvanians" talking about what a helluva guy is Williams, a Democratic state Senator from Philadelphia. Each voter tosses a box one to the other, playing on the Williams campaign's pledge to "think outside the box." But at around the 25-second mark, the box ends up in the hands of a woman ... wearing a Santonio Holmes jersey.

Say what you want about Dan Onorato: He wouldn't have made THAT mistake.

Using the jersey of a player noted for his off-field antics ... a player since traded to the New York Giants Jets ... now THAT is thinking outside the box. You know you've stepped in it when your only conceivable defense for a spot is, "Hey, I intended this to be a Kordell Stewart jersey."

And there may be another problem here. It's generally not a good idea to use Steelers-licensed garb without authorization in a commercial (and the Steelers logo is clearly visible in the ad).  And I'd be ASTOUNDED if the Steelers signed off on Williams' use of their logo for a political spot.

I'll call over to the team later today and report back here. But five will get you 10 that there's a message from the Onorato campaign already on Art Rooney II's voice mail.
