You may have seen this already, but City Paper contributor Manny Theiner makes a cameo appearance in this Wall Street Journal story, about a G-20 haiku contest. In the process, he demonstrates just why we love him so.
The contest, organized by the fine folks at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, encouraged participants to write haiku for the upcoming economic summit. The winner will be posted on the Harris Theater marquee, very near the G-20 convention site.
Manny's entry was funny enough:
No movies tonight
The drama is in the streets
See yinz on Monday
But even funnier was his response when the Journal called:
Theiner, an organizer of live-music events, declined to discuss his haiku, telling a reporter who reached him by phone, "If you aren't calling to tell me I won, there's nothing for me to talk about."
What cracks me up about this isn't that Manny just snubbed a Rupert Murdoch property, in a way most of us alt-weekly scribes only dream about. No, what really cracks me up is that Manny's dust-off is almost a haiku in itself -- one that truly sums up the spirit of global capitalism:
If you aren't calling
to tell me I won, there is
nothing to be said.
