The Russian composer, Vasily Kalinnikov (1866-1901) lived a tragically short life but composed music full of beautiful melodies. His romantic and Russian-sounding music evokes folk music and surroundings of his native land. This is a lyrical program; Kalinnikov's complete published piano music and complete Romances for voice and piano are performed here for the first time. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) thought highly of Kalinnikov and recommended him him for the conductorship at the Malïy Theatre in 1892. Rachmaninov (1873-1943) intervened with Kalinnikov's publisher to help negotiate a better deal before the latter's unfortunate early death.
