Kennywood
Panic struck the Pittsburgh region yesterday when it was announced that Kennywood Park would be sold to the Spanish company Parques Reunidos of Madrid. You would have thought that they announced the park would be shuttering its doors forever.

I understand people’s frustrations that the park isn’t going to be “family owned” any longer. That stinks. No doubt about it.

I think we all need to give this company a chance to see if there will be any differences in the way the park is operated. I am willing to give them a try. Maybe nothing will change. Maybe no one will even notice that it changed owners. Maybe the park will be better? Did anyone ever think of that? There is always room for improvement everywhere, even Kennywood Park.

Would there have been so much clamoring if the park was being sold to another American family or corporation? Probably not.

If the owners of Kennywood Park were so family orientated and community friendly, then why is there talk they owe the borough of West Mifflin about a million dollars in back taxes? Will the borough put a lien on the property? Will the borough be able to face a legal battle with a giant corporation that has endless resources? How will this impact the local economy with jobs? Maybe there will be more. Maybe there will be less.

The bottom line is that there are a lot of questions that still need to be answered before we start rushing to judgment like many have already done in the past 24 hours or so. Let’s ride it out and see what happens.
