Long after the steel industry's demise, heavy-metal throwback band Icarus Witch is keeping metal alive and well in Pittsburgh. The locally based band is currently touring the U.S., supporting its fourth album, the new Draw Down the Moon (Cleopatra Records), which includes a cover of "The Ripper" by Judas Priest. On Wed., Aug. 4, Icarus Witch plays the Hard Rock Café, opening for Y&T. We caught up with bassist (and occasional City Paper contributor) Jason Myers from the road, for a few quick questions about livin' la vida metal.
1. What do you dress up as for Halloween?
Usually a warlock, a gypsy/pirate, a vampire, an evil priest or an '80s rocker, because I procrastinate every year and end up having to wear something from my everyday wardrobe at the last minute.
2. What's coming back first, disco or heavy metal?
That's gotta be a trick question, right? Metal never went anywhere but back underground, so don't call it a comeback!
3. What's cooler, dragons or covens?
Ironically, I'm actually the high priest of a coven called the Cult of the Dragon Ryders, so we merge the most powerful elements of both.
4. Most exciting band you've ever opened for?
Heaven & Hell (a.k.a. Black Sabbath) and Coheed & Cambria. It was the biggest stage, best sound, largest crowd and more importantly a chance to play alongside the mighty Ronnie James Dio at one of his final live appearances before he passed away this year.
5. Most metal thing about Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh is metal. I mean it's the Steel City, for Christ's sake. Iron Workers Union, Steelers, Hot Metal Bridge … we are the Birmingham of the U.S., and since Sabbath and Priest both came from that area, I think we're all poured from the same crucible.
