Thu., March 3 -- Indie Rock
After more than a decade of independently producing its albums, rock group Red Wanting Blue signed with Fanatic Records, which re-released the Ohio-based band's 2008 album, The Magnificent Miles. Blue's music channels fellow veterans like Counting Crows and Sister Hazel, but vocalist Scott Terry offers a deeper, throatier sound. The vibe and sound may be reminiscent of the '90s, but we're happy to go back there. Check out Red Wanting Blue at Club Café with Slingshot Genius and Dream Job. Bethie Girmai 7 p.m. 56-58 S. 12th St., South Side. $10. 412-431-4950 or clubcafelive.com
Mon., March 7 -- Folk Rock
Laura Stevenson and The Cans are sure to surprise your musical palate, with Stevenson's soft, feminine voice set to a backdrop of electric guitar, bass, accordion and trumpet. Although such instruments may seem a puzzling union, The Cans make sense out of it. The Brooklyn-based outfit borrowed members from Bomb The Music Industry, The Best Thing Ever and Latterman to form their latest project. The band is set to release its second album, Sit Resist, under New Jersey label Don Giovanni Records, on April 26. It plays this week at 222 Ormsby. BG 6:30 p.m. 222 Ormsby Ave., Mount Oliver. $5 donation. 21and older. www.myspace.com/222ormsby
Tue., March 8 -- Acoustic
O Moon is the latest installment in Jonathan Richman's long and steady solo career, and like much of his more recent work, it's a far cry from the hard-hitting garage-rock of the Modern Lovers, his seminal band from the 1970s. While the newer material is rooted in Spanish classical guitar and more poetic lyricism, Richman maintains his charmingly wavering voice and, of course, drops references to his hometown of Boston -- forever in love with Massachusetts. Andy Mulkerin 8 p.m. Mr. Small's Theatre, 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale. $15. All ages. 412-821-4447 or www.mrsmalls.com
Thu., March 10 -- Trip-Hop
There's a post-Björk sensibility about Railbird: The soothing purrs of vocalist Sarah Pedinotti are front-and-center while the rest of the band's poppy take on trip-hop oscillates around. The upstate New York five-piece brings its hypnotic mix to the 31st Street Pub this week, sharing a bill with slightly more spastic friends The Rex Complex; the two bands, despite markedly different sounds, collaborate extensively. City Dwelling Nature Seekers and Sleep Experiments open. AM 9 p.m. 3101 Penn Ave., Strip District. $5. 412-391-8334 or www.31stpub.com
