Re: “Shadow Lounge prepares to close after over a decade in a changing neighborhood

Just reading this again with a little sadness today...No mention of all the loyal staff (myself included) and their input and thoughts, no mention of all those who came through the Lounge to move on to "bigger" things such Vanessa German, Nathan James, Jasiri X, Daru Jones, Emmai Alaquiva, Akil Esoon, DJ Huggy, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, and many, many more, all the business collaborations, the national acts such as KRS ONE, Keith Murray, Pharoahe Monche, national spoken word artists, the National Poetry Slam competitions, etc. Wow...I miss the Lounge...The local art throughout the Lounge, the FABULOUS bartenders and cooks, the hosts of the open mics (Gene Stovall, Yah Lioness Borne, myself, Free)...Oh my, I can go on and on...

Re: “Under a new name, Ladyfest returns with a lineup of female-dominated bands

"Vulvapalooza" is such a great name. Sad that some folks are so humorless and quick to perceive offense in that. Must we really pretend that a vulva is not actually a biologically female organ that the majority of women in the world possess? It's only "divisive" if you're intent on voluntarily excluding yourself over something innocuous. Meanwhile, I'm guessing some of the "female-fronted" bands on this fest might have some penis-carrying members who don't bother to take "Ladyfest" as divisive even though they don't identify as ladies.

Love it. It's tough being the first one out there doing anything because everyone in your way says you can't do it, and every one behind you says you are not doing enough. Proud of yinz no matter what!

Isn't Howlers woman-owned as well?

Re: “Famed drummer Ginger Baker talks about playing alongside legends, getting older, and his cantankerous reputation

Also, Ginger plays rhythmic counterpoint. He can take a straight 4 stomp and make it swing (Badge).
You'll actually catch Ginger driving his beats with rudiments, and doing some very complex math between independent left/right hands and feet. Cream was so good because GB didn't just drum along with the music; he was fully one third of the music, at the very least. Like Jack Bruce's basslines, Ginger plays a new song within the song, greatly expanding the scope of what we hear. Bottom line is he makes it all sound so interesting!

"Listening"...yeah. Drummer Hal Blaine told me *that* is the key to *good* drumming, and too many interviewers and civilians overlook this word when its revealed as the bedrock of a good performance.

Re: “On the heels of the band's 13th release, Wire's Colin Newman wants fans to look beyond Pink Flag

Wish I could have gone, if only to urge Colin Newman to implore his wife Malka Spigel to help figure out a way to finally get her legendary postpunk band Minimal Compact to the States once and for all (if not to Pittsburgh, then at least to a couple of the cities that have a lot of Israelis: LA, Miami, NYC, perhaps Chicago due to the Wax Trax connection). They were refused entry in the 80s during the whole Reagan-era INS paranoia about foreign musicians.

Wire show in Cleveland at the Beachland last year was good, though. I'm hoping the show last Sunday was, as well.

I have always felt that the guys from Wire would be able to school you about some academic subject and then be able to be the shit out of you. I'm glad they're still around and kicking ass.

Re: “The Mountain Goats' Jon Wurster talks about Beat The Champ, the Best Show, and the moments he'll remember on his deathbed

jon's drumming on MG's Foreign Onject is off the hook & takes the song to a whole different level! He's amazing. Young drummers listen up!

Re: “On its new record, Dendritic Arbor progress beyond its black metal roots

I may be biased, but Chris McCune (also of the bands Locks And Dams, October, Bear Skull and Knife) is the best drummer in Pittsburgh.

Great article. About a group mainstream would usually not know of or recognize. Each of the members are talented musicians who has come together for art. As in every piece of art it is all about the beholder but still quality art. Good luck guys, you have been true to your vision.
