Looking for a demeaning experience at a glorified PIZZA PLACE? I promise anger, mediocre food, time limits. The area has great eateries - NOT this one. Amazing they get away with it. Don't let them.

Really!! Overpriced for poor food. First off I NEVER complain, but i MUST in this experience. There are many great Italian, Mexican, Chinese restaurants in Pittsburgh. We are blessed to have such diversity and great food in the city. When I first heard there was a Sicilian Venue in the city, my wife and I were very excited. Sicilian is a specific niche, and cultural experience. Very different than your so called American Italian theme cuisines and traditional Italian dishes. I am first generation Sicilian, my name is Luigi. My whole family comes from Sicily. I traveled there 7 times and visited all three corners. I also fluently speak Sicilian and Italian. My family owns and operates restaurants in PA, CA, IL, and Canada. So I feel am confident to judge this experience.
All cultural dishes are perfected from the food that the region provides. Sicily is in the Mediterranean. IDIOTS! Lets start with the ambience. I do give it an 8 out of 10. I do feel they captured the rustic theme that only the mountains of Sicily provide. This review should not reflect anything our waiter, Rich, had provided. He was very pleasurable to speak to and gave recommendations and check on us frequently. His 20% tip should reflect that. In saying that, this negative review is all about FOOD! Keep in mind Sicily's dominate staples are seafood, lamb and citrus fruits, prickly pears, exotic vegetables like artichokes , Asparagus, plum tomatoes, variety of hot peppers, wild mushrooms, Olives. Capture herb flavors like oregano, rosemary, sage, basil, parsley and bay leaves. Start with using more of this than your French or northern Italian exposure on your menu. The appetizer was the calamari and shrimp with spinach. It was barely COOKED and taste bland. Can you say PA Health Dept.? Then the salad had walnuts and raisins. Can you say a Waldorf German salad in Italy? Nothing Sicilian about it. Maybe the olive. k :( poor. Than pasta, penne in vodka sauce. Vodka sauce originates to the French and perfected in Naples, Italy. NOT SICIILIAN. Study Chef. Than my wife chose an easy dish of pork Parmigianino. Extremely bland canned tomatoes taste. My experience ended in two bites. Fatty pork chop in drowned Worchester sauce with under cooked mushrooms. Real nice guys. I can go on but you get the picture. I paid $93 for this mistake. Should have gone to a Japanese steak house and a movie. Over all the area complements the restaraunts venue. DANGEROUS AND TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!
I had the pleasure of dining at Big Jim's last night. We also sat at the bar. It felt like we had front row seats at the Comedy Club. The barmaid was hilarious. I had the sandwich with the fried egg and side of onion rings.My guest had the chicken salad. Both portions were generous bring your appetite. As a bonus Big Jim's is located close to the Eliza Furnace Trail. A nice place to stop after a bike ride.
If you are into trendy quaint martini bars, this aint the place. However, if you want the best rueben and a cold beer, you are going to love this place. I just went there tonight because I heard Guy Fieri (food networks Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives) made a stop there. As I drove up, I almost turned around, this is not the type of place I usually go when I travel, but I wanted to go to a good old fashioned neighborhood bar when i was in Pittsburgh. I parked around back and went in. it was dark and poorly lit, but the food smelled awesome. I sat at the bar and the barmaid was really friendly and said they are famous for thier rueben. I ordered another option which was basically a reuben with a fried egg and cole slaw instead of sourcrout. IT WAS FANTASTIC!!! The people were great, and the bill for dinner was $12 including a great cup of soup. An awesome restaurant for the "Regular Guy" (to quote Rodney Dangerfield). The pizza also looked excellent.

We drove past it; almost missing it and what a shame it would have been! We spotted it just in time and did a quick turn around pulling into the adjacent parking lot and walked into a quaint little restaurant with an atmosphere that was very large. Flames were shooting over the grill and the pounding of veal was a show in itself! The young Chef/Owner was friendly and welcoming and greeted each table during the course of the evening. The meal was a delight from the sumptuous appetizers to the delectible dessert and we left toting our doggy bags, feeling as stuffed as stuffed meatball we had eaten as an appetizer (along with the calimari and the greens). Every morsel we ate (and we ate a lot) from appetizers to dessert was outstanding and I was a little reluctant to write this to share the secret of this wonderful little secret gem. It is very small with limited seating so sharing this nformation could well mean we won't be able to get a table when we want to go back but I felt compelled to do so. t is undoubtably one of the best restaurants we have been to in a very long time. We have returned twice and have reservations again for next week. A true culinary delight!
We went there recently. It was crowded at 7:00, and we had to see a play, so we came back a few hours later (the kitchen closes at 10:00, but the place stays open until the last diner leaves). Fancy ambiance? Faggeddaboudit. This unpretentious place is clean and bright, but it has the feel of a true neighborhood restaurant, with an open kitchen and simple decor that welcomes anyone, including families--I could just hear Schlotzzo intoning, "Try the veal, it's the best in the city." So, I ordered veal parma and the fabulous Miss Wendy had fettuchini Alfredo. The meal starts with lightly toasted Italian bread and some nice dipping oil (Zoe brand--the chef-owner's wife is named Zoe). My dinner salad was excellent--fresh crispy greens, nicely shaved carrot (rhymes with garrotte), olives, roasted red peppers, and a chunk of gorgonzola, graced with just the right amount of balsamic vinegar. I also ordered greens and beans as an appetizer--soft, but still crisply escarole amidst tender fava beans with garlic and olive oil. My greens and beans arrived after my entree--a consequence of getting there near closing time--so the waitress told me it would be complimentary. The veal parma came atop a foundation of al-dente spaghetti, complimented by a fine, mild tomato sauce (listed as "mother's gravy" on the menu). The breading was hot and crisp, but tender enough to cut with a fork. There could have been just a little more gravy. Wendy's fettuchini Alfredo was not as numbingly rich as other places tend to serve. That's actually why I seldom order it--a few forks and I'm thinking of how many miles I've got to run to keep it off my waist. This Alfredo was a bit lighter than usual, which is why I liked it. Wendy, maybe, was looking for something heavier. And she thought it was a little salty. I didn't. There was plenty of food, and were pleased to take some of our dinner home. We shared a slice of coconut cream pie for dessert. Legends does not have a liquor license, so it's BYOB. I don't drink, but I noticed lots of people with their own bottles, and the place was busy enough, so obviously that's not a deterrence. And neither are the prices. There are only one or two entrees over $20, and my veal at $17 was actually one of the pricier items. For less than $35 for two and an excellent meal? We'll definitely go there again. Maybe tomorrow.
