First thing this morning, I was greeted at the City Paper offices by members of garage-punk local legends The Cynics and representatives from Get Hip Records. In other words, by Michael Kastelic, Greg Kostelich and Barbara Garcia-Bernardo. I wasn't fully awake yet and had no idea why they were here; they seemed to have been up for hours, drinking coffee. Eventually, I learned they would be guests on the Lynn Cullen radio show, which happens in the studio downstairs. Last fall, I had the pleasure of writing a cover story on The Cynics, looking at the band's 25-year history and the unique personalities and musical sensibilities that have both torn them apart and strangely sustained them over the years.
The band reminded me that they have a big show tomorrow night -- Sat., April 10 -- at the Rex Theater, with guests The Aviation Blondes and Meeting of Important People. More info about the show is on the Rex Theater Web site. Check it out!
