Waking up with The Cynics

Posted By on Fri, Apr 9, 2010 at 7:07 PM

First thing this morning, I was greeted at the City Paper offices by members of garage-punk local legends The Cynics and representatives from Get Hip Records. In other words, by Michael Kastelic, Greg Kostelich and Barbara Garcia-Bernardo. I wasn't fully awake yet and had no idea why they were here; they seemed to have been up for hours, drinking coffee. Eventually, I learned they would be guests on the Lynn Cullen radio show, which happens in the studio downstairs. Catch video of the episode (and longtime Cullen listener Kastelic in all his glory) here

Last fall, I had the pleasure of writing a cover story on The Cynics, looking at the band's 25-year history and the unique personalities and musical sensibilities that have both torn them apart and strangely sustained them over the years.

The band reminded me that they have a big show tomorrow night -- Sat., April 10 -- at the Rex Theater, with guests The Aviation Blondes and Meeting of Important People. More info about the show is on the Rex Theater Web site. Check it out!

MP3 Monday returns: Developer

Posted By on Mon, Apr 5, 2010 at 2:39 PM

Hello, friends!

It's Monday again, and this time that actually means an MP3 is going to be posted. This week we're posting one from Developer, aka Corey Layman, also of the Karl Hendricks Trio. He's been on this project, lately, right? Where he writes and posts a song each week. They're pretty good little rock tunes, and he's over halfway through at this point.

He released a compilation of the first 13 tunes, and this is one of them: our MP3 this week, Hand You're Dealt. Download! Listen! Enjoy! Add Project 52 to your RSS reader! It's worth it, I swear.
