Today we had to make the very difficult decision to part ways with our editor, Charlie Deitch.
Charlie has served Pittsburgh City Paper and the people of Pittsburgh incredibly well in his tenure here and oversaw many positive changes at City Paper, including our newest redesign.
We are very excited for the future of CP and feel like we have a team in place that will help to move CP into a future where we can encompass all of Pittsburgh, with a renewed focus on neighborhoods, the arts, food and drink, and of course, local news.
Change is always difficult, and this was a difficult day. We are committed to the employees of CP, who work hard every day to put together a publication that we can all be proud of.
We wish Charlie nothing but the best in his future endeavors.
We are excited to announce that Rob Rossi will now be joining us as Editor of City Paper. Rob has been a Pittsburgh media staple for years and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. We look forward to Rob’s introduction to you in the next few days, and we are excited for you to all be a part of the City Paper’s bright future.

Disgusting.
Can’t have the editor saying anything bad about Metcalfe can we?
Your readers deserve to know the justification for this decision.
I expect Ryan Deto and other political writers will pick up the slack now, especially because Charlie’s firing had nothing to do with the Metcalfe coverage?
From Charlie’s twitter:
As of 1015 this morning I am no longer the editor of the @PGHCityPaper i was told I had to go. This comes exactly one week after my acting general manager told me that I was to no longer write about @RepMetcalfe Because he is a client of the parent company, the Butler Eagle.
Agree the firing must be political since unexpected and no justification. So much for free press. Being more common in the Trump era
Poor move, Butler Eagle. Your actions clearly serve a no-good politician client, rather than your hardworking staff and loyal readership. Sad!
Cool so who wants to start up a new alt-weekly?
Youre replacing Charlie with Rossi? Lolololllllllllllzzzzzz. Trying to run city paper into the ground, huh?
Daryl Metcalfe is a homophobic and racist bigot, to fire an excellent journalist in order to appease such a stain on our society is disgusting. Today the Pittsburgh City Paper has lost its soul, respectability, and credibility. Any staff member who chooses to silently continue working at this paper without publicly calling out this overtly political act and correcting it, is both complicit and permissive of the destruction of their own integrity. Not to mention, since it is obvious that the owners of the Eagle and the City Paper are Metcalfe’s lap-dogs, continuing to work at this tarnished institution means that you are permissive in Metcalfe’s racism and homophobia as well.
Without an immediate course correction and apology to Charlie Deitch and the readers of the CP, future publishing of the Pittsburgh City Paper will only be good as kindling. I won’t hold my breath tho.
Shame on you, city paper, for breaking under the weight of your purse strings. So much credibility and respect lost. You have made a serious miscalculation. Shame.
Daryl Metcalfe is a repulsive asshole. I hope local businesses will boycott and cease distribution of CP.
Awful. C Deitch was expressing his voice. Not a new day. A worse one.
Metcalfe is scum, and so he shall be called scum. Eff him and his right wing posture. Hopefully voted out!
Apparently free press isn’t a thing anymore. Really awful move, Eagle Media Corp.
this is some bullshit.
You’re replacing an award-winning journalist with some second rate hockey reporter over Daryl “I don’t speak Mexican” Metcalfe? The guy who’s a national joke for being an extra irrational homophobe? The guy who freaks out if you touch his arm? The guy who has neo nazis as his fanboys? The guy who is is your client…Oh wait. Thanks for letting us know exactly what your priorities are.
Well time to stop reading the City Paper.
As long as I can keep lining my birds’s cages with this fish wrap I’m fine with this decision. CP likes to pose as some cool, edgy publication but it quite an uninspired attempt at “progressive” news.
Im an artist and writer and would like to be on the staff of a new alternative weekly.

Vernon Wise: “We are very excited for the future of CP”
A future of bland journalism?
I am not a fan of this staff change. Seems like the CP is trying to produce more bland, less controversial news.
It looks like special snowflake Daryl Metcalfe is dictating your personnel decisions. Were extremist Metcalfe’s feelings hurt so bad that he or his thugs (like the American Guard) were threatening the Butler Eagle?
City Paper is now just a vehicle for the racist, fundamentalist, fascist agenda of Daryl Metcalfe. BOYCOTT! SHUT IT DOWN!
It seems the staff at the city paper have never tested their best of voting entry requirement page. One of the requirements is to enter your date of birth. Not normally an issue, except here. One cannot change the year without paging back one month at a time through every year untill you reach the applicable year of your birth. If you’re born any time before 2010, it’s a real neusance. Try going back to the late ’50’s! Won’t ever do it again. I voted this time for a business that deserved my vote, but didn’t bother voting for a couple others I thought were deserving. My apologies to those businesses.
