This film was not screened for critics locally, so we took a look at the trailer.
Film: Paddington
Opening Date: Fri., Jan. 16
Stars: Hugh (“Lord Grantham”) Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, a CGI talking bear
Necessary Info: Based on the popular series of British children’s books
Trailer Analysis: It starts peacefully enough — with quiet shots of a train station, and tinkly music-box music, before kicking into kid-vid franticness. Never mind the whimsical charm of the books, this trailer aims for the low bar, showing the bear Paddington in a series of gross-outs (digging for earwax, falling face first in toilet) and cartoonish action bits (surfing a wave of water down a spiral staircase in a bathtub, skateboarding). There’s a villain, a taxidermist (Nicole Kidman) who wants abduct Paddington and get him stuffed for a collection. (A talking-and-surfing live bear sounds like a better business opportunity — just sayin’.) Exploding toilets aside, this is a film ABOUT FAMILY: “This family needs that bear every bit as much as that bear needs you.”
Based on these 2:31 minutes, should you go? Do you really want to go out in the cold, when you can just stay home and read one of the books?
