A 29-year-old Pitcairn man will spend the next two-and-half to five years in prison for causing the death of a cyclist and leaving the scene of the accident in July 2012.

James Price, 46, of Homewood, was killed in a hit-and-run accident July 25 while cycling along Penn Avenue in Point Breeze. Jeffrey McClure was arrested for the crime two weeks later and charged with several counts related to Price’s death.

On Tuesday, McClure pleaded guilty before Common Pleas Judge Beth Lazarra on one count each of accident involving death or injury and accident involving death or injury while not properly licensed. McClure's license was suspended at the time of the accident.

According to a press release from District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala's office, McClure was traveling at a high rate of speed and fled the scene. He was arrested when police received a tip that McClure was involved.

In exchange for his plea, McClure received the prison sentence which will be followed by eight years probation.

Price’s death last year occurred in one of the most dangerous years for cyclists locally.
