Community-gardening initiative takes root, arr arr

Interested in local food? Gardening? Why not combine the two to start a community garden next year?

Grow Pittsburgh, in partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, is assisting communities to start community food gardens.

From GP's web site:

"The garden program lasts for two years, with the goal of garden self-sufficiency by the end of the second growing season. To be eligible, garden groups must have a partnering non-profit, and a suitable site with lead levels below 400 PPM on public or non-profit-owned land in the City of Pittsburgh. "

Applications for City Growers -- gardens within the City – are due by Aug. 24 (Friday); applications for Allegheny Grows — gardens within Allegheny County but outside the city — are due by Sept. 7.

There's also an information session this Sat., Aug. 25, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Grow Pittsburgh,

6587 Hamilton Ave #2W, Pittsburgh 15206. Please RSVP to [email protected]
